Abstract

Patients with diabetes mellitus 25% at risk of having foot ulcers throughout their lifetime and increase the risk of amputation 34 times. This complication can be prevented by foot care, but this activity has not become a routine habit of diabetes mellitus patients in their daily lives. The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors associated with foot care behavior in diabetic patients in Sidomulyo Health  Center, Samarinda City.

Respondents were taken by purposive sampling as many as 66 people in the working area of Sidomulyo Health Center. Variables measured were knowledge, self-confidence, health services, health workers and cadres as independent variables. While the dependent variable is foot care behaviours. The instruments used included the Nottingham Assessment Assessment of Functional Foot Care (NAFF), Patient Interpretation Neuropathy (PIN) and Foot Care Confident Scale (FCCS). Data were analyzed through Pearson and Mann Whitney test with a significance level of 95% (α = 0.05).

The results showed that factors related to foot care behaviors included knowledge (p value 0.04) and self-confidence (p value 0.03). While the factors of health workers, health services and cadres were found to have no relationship with foot care behavior. Internal factors have a direct relationship with self behavior in caring for the feet compared to external factors. For this reason, it is important to emphasize programs that increase the patient's knowledge and confidence in health care.
